ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Slok 1st Guru.

ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਕਲਮ ਧੰਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਧਨੁ ਮਸੁ ॥

Blest is the paper, blest the pen, blest the inkpot and blest the ink.

ਧਨੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ॥੧॥

O Nanak, blest is the writer, who writes the True Name.

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

1st Guru.

ਆਪੇ ਪਟੀ ਕਲਮ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਰਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਭਿ ਤੂੰ ॥

Thou, of Thyself are the tablet, O Lord, of Thyself the pen and Thou are also the writing thereon.

ਏਕੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਾਹੇ ਕੂ ॥੨॥

Speak thou of the one Lord, O Nanak, Why should there be a second?

ਹਰਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਭਗਤ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

In every age God created His saints and preserved their honour.

ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥

Wicked Harnakhsh, the Lord killed and saved Prehlad.

ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਪਿਠਿ ਦੇਇ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

On the egotists and slanderers, the Lord turned His back and to Namdev, He showed His face (affection).

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੨੦॥

Servant Nanak has so served His God, that He will deliver him in the end.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Slok 1st Guru.

ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਸੁਖੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਭਇਆ ਜਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਾਮਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

Pain is the medicine and pleasure the malady, and where there is pleasure, there is no desire for God.

ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾ ਹਉ ਕਰੀ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

Thou art the Doer, I can do nothing. Even if I try to do something, it comes to nothing.

ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥

Sacrifice am I unto Thee. who abides in His creation.

ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਲਖਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Thine limit cannot be comprehended. Pause.

ਜਾਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਅਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥

Thy light is contained in the creatures and the creatures are contained in Thine light. Thou O mighty Inconceivable Lord, art filling all.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸੁਆਲਿੑਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੋ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥

Thou art the True Lord, and beautiful is Thy praise. He who hymns it, swims across.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀਆ ਬਾਤਾ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥੨॥

Nanak tells the tales of the Creator that what the Lord is to do, that He continues to do.

ਸੋ ਦਰੁ ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧

Sodar Aasa Measure First Guru.

ਸੋ ਦਰੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਹਾ ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਬਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥

Which is Your gate and which the mansion, sitting where-in (Thou) takest care of all,(O Lord)!

ਵਾਜੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਦ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖਾ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

Countless are Your musical instruments of various types which resound there and various are musicians there.

ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਾਗ ਪਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਗਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

Good many are Your measures with their consorts and good many Your minstrels hymn Thee.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਪਵਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥

Sing Thee wind, water and fire; and the Righteous Justice sings (Thine) praises at (Thy) door.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਚਿਤੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

Chitra Gupta (the recording angles), who know to write and on the basis of whose scribed writ, the Righteous Judge adjudicates, hymn Thee.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਈਸਰੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੇਵੀ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥

Shiva, Brahma, and goddess, ever beautiful as adorned by Thee, sing Thee.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

Indra, seated in his throne, with the deities at Thy gate, sings Thee.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਸਾਧ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

The Siddhas in Samaadhi sing of You; the Saadhus sing of You in contemplation.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਵੀਰ ਕਰਾਰੇ ॥

The continents, the true and the patients sing Thine praises and the dauntless warriors, admire Thee.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਨਿ ਰਖੀਸੁਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਵੇਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

The scholars, the readers of the Vedas of all the ages, together with the seven supreme sages, exalt Thee.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਮੋਹਣੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਨਿ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲੇ ॥

The captivating she-seraphs, who beguile the heat in paradise, this world and the nether regions sing Thee.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਰਤਨ ਉਪਾਏ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

The (fourteen) invaluable objects, created by Thee with sixty-eight places of pilgrimage, hymn (Thee.)

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਜੋਧ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਸੂਰਾ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ ॥

The supremely mighty warriors and Divine heroes sing Thee and the four sources of creation magnify Thee.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਖੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

The continents the worlds and solar, system, created Thine glories.

ਸੇਈ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਰਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਸਾਲੇ ॥

They also eulogise Thee, who are Thy saints and are pleasing to Thee and are steeped (in Name) and thy bliss impairing love.

ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਮੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਿਆ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

Many others whom I cannot recollect within my mind, sing Thee. How can Nanak think of them.

ਸੋਈ ਸੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਾਈ ॥

That and that Lord is ever True. He is True, and True is His Name.

ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਸੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਾਈ ॥

He, who created the creation is and shall also be. He shall not depart when the creation shall depart (disappear).

ਰੰਗੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਭਾਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥

(God), who fashioned the world, has by divers contrivances created the creation of various colors and kinds.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

Having created the creation, He, as it pleases His Honour, beholds His handiwork.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥

Whatever pleases Him He does that. (To Him) then no one can issue an order.

ਸੋ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਤਿਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਹਣੁ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੧॥

He is the king the Emperor of the kings Nanak remains subjects to (His) will.

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Asa Measure, First Guru.

ਸੁਣਿ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

By hearing every one calls Thee great (O Lord!),

ਕੇਵਡੁ ਵਡਾ ਡੀਠਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

But One, who has seen Thee Knows, how great Thou art.

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

None can appraise and narrate (Thee).

ਕਹਣੈ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥

Thine describers remain absorbed in Thee.

ਵਡੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥

O My great Master of unfathomable depth, (Thou art) an ocean of excellences.

ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਤਾ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਚੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

None knows, how much and how great, Thy expanse is. Pause.

ਸਭਿ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥

All the contemplatives have met and practised contemplation.

ਸਭ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

All the appraisers, having met together, have appraises (Thy) worth.

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰਹਾਈ ॥

The theologians, the visualisers and they, who are the preachers of preachers, (have described Thee.)

ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥

They cannot tell even an iota of Thy greatness.

ਸਭਿ ਸਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ॥

All truths, all austerities all goodness

ਸਿਧਾ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥

and the magnificences of the men of occult powers,

ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਿਧੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ॥

without Thee none has ever attained such power.

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਈਆ ॥੩॥

With Thy grace they are procured No one can obstruct and stop (their flow).

ਆਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥

What can the helpless creatures do?

ਸਿਫਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥

Thine treasure are brimful with Thy praises,

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ॥

Why should he, whom. Thou givest, think of some other means?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੨॥

O Nanak! the True one Himself is the decorator.

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Asa Measure, First Guru.

ਆਖਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

By repeating thy Name, I live, by forgetting it I die.

ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

Difficult to utter is the True Name.

ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੂਖ ॥

If man feels hunger for the True Name,

ਉਤੁ ਭੂਖੈ ਖਾਇ ਚਲੀਅਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥

that hunger shall consume his pains.

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥

How can He be forgotten O my Mother?

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

True is the Lord and true His Name, O my Mother? Pause.

ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

Recounting the greatness of the True name,

ਆਖਿ ਥਕੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥

Men have grown weary but they have not been able to appraise even a jot of it.

ਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਆਖਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

If all men meet and glorify Thee,

ਵਡਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

Thou would neither grow greater nor lesser.

ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

That Lord dies not, nor there is any mourning.

ਦੇਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਭੋਗੁ ॥

He continues to give; His provisions never run short.

ਗੁਣੁ ਏਹੋ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

This alone is His merit that none else is like Him.

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥

There has been none, nor there shall be any.

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਆਪਿ ਤੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥

As great as Thou art, O; Lord! so, great are Thine gift.

ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੀਤੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

(Thine is the personality) who makest the say and the night (too).

ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਕਮਜਾਤਿ ॥

Vile are they who forget their Master.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਨਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੩॥

O Nanak! without God's Name, men are out caste wretches.

ਰਾਗੁ ਗੂਜਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Gujri Measure, Fourth Guru.

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਤਪੁਰਖਾ ਬਿਨਉ ਕਰਉ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

O my Great Sat Guru, the accepted one of the Lord and the True Person, I make a supplication before Thee.

ਹਮ ਕੀਰੇ ਕਿਰਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

I, an insect and a worm, have sought Thy shelter, mercifully bestow on me the light of God's Name, O True Guru!

ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥

O My friend, the bright Guru! Illumine me with the Name of the Omnipresent Lord.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਸਖਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹਮਰੀ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The Name revealed to me by Guru's instruction is the friend of my very life and God's praise is my life's vocation. Pause.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਵਡੇਰੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਧਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਸ ॥

The greatest good fortune is of the people of God who have faith in the Lord Master and thirst for God.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੨॥

By obtaining the Name of the Lord God they are satiated and by meeting the society of saints their virtues shine forth.

ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਜਮ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

They who have not gained God, God's elixir and God's Name are unfortunate and are near (handed over to) the minister of death.

ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਏ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵੇ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਾਸਿ ॥੩॥

Fie on the life and accursed the hope of living of those who have not sought the society and protection of the Sat Guru.

ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਤਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲਿਖਾਸਿ ॥

The men of God, who have obtained the society of the True Guru, they have, on their fore-heads the pro-ordained writ.

ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੪॥

Blest, blest is the saints congregation from where God's elixir is procured. By meeting God's own, O Nanak! manifest becomes Lord's Name.

ਰਾਗੁ ਗੂਜਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Gujri Measure, Fifth Guru.

ਕਾਹੇ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਉਦਮੁ ਜਾ ਆਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਪਰਿਆ ॥

Why doest thou, O Mind! think of enterprises, when Revered God Himself is engaged in thy care?

ਸੈਲ ਪਥਰ ਮਹਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਏ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰਿ ਧਰਿਆ ॥੧॥

In the rocks and stones He has created beings. Their sustenance He puts before them.

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਧਉ ਜੀ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁ ਤਰਿਆ ॥

O My venerable Lord of mammon! He, who mixes with the society of saints, is saved.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੂਕੇ ਕਾਸਟ ਹਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

By the grace of the Guru, (he) obtains the supreme state (as) the dry wood blooms forth. Pause.

ਜਨਨਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕਿਸ ਕੀ ਧਰਿਆ ॥

Of mother, father, people, son, (and) wife no one is the support of another.

ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹੇ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਕਾਹੇ ਮਨ ਭਉ ਕਰਿਆ ॥੨॥

To every individual the Lord reaches sustenance, why fearest (thou), O My soul?

ਊਡੇ ਊਡਿ ਆਵੈ ਸੈ ਕੋਸਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਛੈ ਬਚਰੇ ਛਰਿਆ ॥

The flamingoes come having flown over hundreds of miles, their youngling they leave behind.

ਤਿਨ ਕਵਣੁ ਖਲਾਵੈ ਕਵਣੁ ਚੁਗਾਵੈ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਕਰਿਆ ॥੩॥

Who feeds them and who causes them to peck? (Hast thou ever) thought of it in thy mind?

ਸਭਿ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਦਸ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਾਨ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਰ ਤਲ ਧਰਿਆ ॥

All the nine treasure and the eighteen supernatural powers, the Lord holds on the palm of His hand.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਸਦ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਰਿਆ ॥੪॥੫॥

Slave Nanak is devoted, dedicated and ever a sacrifice (unto Thee, O Lord!) To Thy vastness there is no limit or bound.

ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਸੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ

Asa Measure, Fourth Guru. That Lord.

ਸੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

That Lord is pure, Lord God is sans stain, God is unapproachable unintelligible and unrivalled.

ਸਭਿ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

All meditate, all meditate on Thee, O Reverend God, the True Creator!

ਸਭਿ ਜੀਅ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ਜੀ ਤੂੰ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥

All the creatures are Thine, Thou art the Bountiful to the living beings.

ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਜੀ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

O ye saints! meditate on God, the Dispeller of all the distresses.

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੀ ਕਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

God Himself is the Master and Himself the servant, How insignificant the man is, O Nanak!1

ਤੂੰ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥

Thou, O venerable and unique Lord God! art uniterruptedly contained in all the hearts and every thing.

ਇਕਿ ਦਾਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਜੀ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ॥

Some are the givers and some the mumpers. All these are Thine worderous frolics.

ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਜੀ ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

Thou Thyself art the Giver and Thyself the Enjoyer. Beside Thee I know of none other.

ਤੂੰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਜੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣਾ ॥

Thou art the infinite and limitless supreme Lord, What excellences of Thine should I narrate and recount?

ਜੋ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਜੀ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੁਰਬਾਣਾ ॥੨॥

Serf Nanak is a sacrifice unto those who serve, who serve Thee, O sire Lord!

ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਜੀ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ ॥

Who deliberate and ponder over Thee, O Sire Lord! those persons abide in peace in this world.

ਸੇ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸੇ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਭਏ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਜੀ ਤਿਨ ਤੂਟੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ ॥

Emancipated and liberated are they who remember Thee, O Sire God, Their death's noose is cut.

ਜਿਨ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਜੀ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਸਭੁ ਗਵਾਸੀ ॥

They who meditate on the Fearless, the Fearless Lord; their fear is all shaken off.

ਜਿਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਜਿਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਸਮਾਸੀ ॥

They who have served, they who have served my Sire God; they are absorbed in the personality of Lord God.

ਸੇ ਧੰਨੁ ਸੇ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਜੀ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਸੀ ॥੩॥

Blest are they, blest are they, who have meditated on Sire God. Serf Nanak is devoted unto then.

ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਜੀ ਭਰੇ ਬਿਅੰਤ ਬੇਅੰਤਾ ॥

Infinite and innumerable treasures of Thine meditation, Thine meditation, ever remain brimful.

ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਸਲਾਹਨਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਨੰਤਾ ॥

In many and various ways, the numberless saint of Thine, saints of Thine, O God! praise Thee.

ਤੇਰੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਕਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਜੀ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪਹਿ ਜਪਹਿ ਬੇਅੰਤਾ ॥

Good many and servant perform Thy, (O Sire) Thy worship, O Endless God! They practise penances and repeat Thy Name.

ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਪੜਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਜੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੰਤਾ ॥

Many and various men of Thine read many Simirtis and Shashtras. They accomplish rituals and perform six religious rites.

ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਭਲੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਜੋ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥੪॥

Sublime are those saints, thou saints, O Serf Nanak! who are pleasing to my auspicious Master.

ਤੂੰ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਜੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

Thou are the primal Being, the most excellent Creator. None else is as great as Thee.

ਤੂੰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਏਕੋ ਜੀ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥

From age to age Thou art one and the same, aye and ever, and Thou art identically the same. Such an ever stable Creator Thou art.

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

Whatever Thou Thyself likest, that comes to pass. What Thyself Thou actest, that gets accomplished.

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਉਪਾਈ ਜੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਸਭ ਗੋਈ ॥

Thou Thyself created the whole universe and having fashioned Thou Thyself shall destroy it all.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੇ ਜੀ ਜੋ ਸਭਸੈ ਕਾ ਜਾਣੋਈ ॥੫॥੧॥

Slave Nanak sings the praises of the Sire Creator, who is the knower of one and all.

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Asa Measure, Fourth Guru.

ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਮੈਡਾ ਸਾਂਈ ॥

O God! Thou art the true creator, my Master,

ਜੋ ਤਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਥੀਸੀ ਜੋ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਹਉ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

That alone happens what pleaseth Thee. I receive that what Thou givest me. Pause.

ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

All are thine and all meditate on Thee.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

He, unto whom Thou showest mercy, obtains the jewel of Thy Name.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਧਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

The pious persons obtain the Name and the self-willed lose it.

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Thou Thyself separatest the mortals and Thyself unitest them.

ਤੂੰ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਸਭ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

Thou art the river and all are with in Thee.

ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

Beside Thee, there is no one else.

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਖੇਲੁ ॥

All the sentient-beings are Thine play things

ਵਿਜੋਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੨॥

The separated meet, but it is through good luck that the union of the separated is accomplished.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਤੂ ਜਾਣਾਇਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

The man, whom thou causeth to understand, understands Thee,

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥

and he ever utters are repeats Thine praises.

ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

He, who has served Thee, has obtained peace.

ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

He easily gets absorbed in Thy Name.2

ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

Thou Thyself are thy Maker. It is by Thy doing that everything comes to pass.

ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

Beside Thee, there is no other second.

ਤੂ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੋਇ ॥

Thou beholdest and understandest the created creation of Thine.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੨॥

Through the Guru, O slave Nanak! God is revealed.

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Asa Measure, First Guru.

ਤਿਤੁ ਸਰਵਰੜੈ ਭਈਲੇ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਕੀਆ ॥

Man has obtained an abode in that world-pool, whose water that Lord has made hot as fire.

ਪੰਕਜੁ ਮੋਹ ਪਗੁ ਨਹੀ ਚਾਲੈ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਡੂਬੀਅਲੇ ॥੧॥

In the mire of worldly love, his feet move on not. I have seen him drowning there-in.

ਮਨ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਮੂੜ ਮਨਾ ॥

O foolish man! why rememberest thou not the unique Lord in thy mind.

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

By forgetting God, thy virtues, O man! shall wither away. Pause.

ਨਾ ਹਉ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਨਹੀ ਪੜਿਆ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੁਗਧਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

I am not a continent or a true man nor a scholar, Foolish and ignorant, I am born in this world.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾ ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਨਾਹੀ ਵੀਸਰਿਆ ॥੨॥੩॥

Pray Nanak! I have sought the sanctuary of those who forget Thee not,(O Lord!).

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Asa Measure, Fifth Guru.

ਭਈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹੁਰੀਆ ॥

This human body has come to thy hand.

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਮਿਲਣ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਰੀਆ ॥

This is thy chance to meet the Lord of the world.

ਅਵਰਿ ਕਾਜ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਕਾਮ ॥

Other works are of no avail to thee.

ਮਿਲੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਭਜੁ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ॥੧॥

Joining the society of saints, contemplate over the Name alone.

ਸਰੰਜਾਮਿ ਲਾਗੁ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਰਨ ਕੈ ॥

Make effort for crossing the dreadful world-ocean.

ਜਨਮੁ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਜਾਤ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

In the love of worldliness, the human life is passing in vain. Pause.

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

I have not practised meditation, arduous toil, self-restraint and faith.

ਸੇਵਾ ਸਾਧ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥

I have not served the Saint and have not recognised God, the King.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਨੀਚ ਕਰੰਮਾ ॥

Groveling are mine actions, says Nanak.

ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਕੀ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਰਮਾ ॥੨॥੪॥

Preserve the honour of thine shelter-seeker, (O my Master!)

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਮਹਾ ਕਾਲ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਜੇ ਪਰੇ ਸੁ ਲਏ ਬਚਾਇ ॥

ਔਰ ਨ ਉਪਜਾ ਦੂਸਰ ਜਗ ਭਛਿਯੋ ਸਭੈ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੩੬੬॥

ਜੋ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਸਿਕੇਤੁ ਕੀ ਨਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

ਤਿਨ ਪਰ ਅਪਨੋ ਹਾਥ ਦੈ ਅਸਿਧੁਜ ਲੇਤ ਬਚਾਇ ॥੩੬੭॥

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਆਨਿ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮ ਮਚਾਹੁ ॥

ਏਕ ਨਿਦਾਨ ਕਰੋ ਰਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

ਕੈ ਅਸਿਧੁਜਿ ਕੈ ਦਾਨਵ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੩੬੯॥

ਏਕ ਪਾਵ ਤਜਿ ਜੁਧ ਨ ਭਾਜਾ ॥

ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਦੈਤਨ ਕਾ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

ਆਂਤੌ ਗੀਧ ਗਗਨ ਲੈ ਗਏ ॥

ਬਾਹਤ ਬਿਸਿਖ ਤਊ ਹਠ ਭਏ ॥੩੭੦॥

ਅਸੁਰ ਅਮਿਤ ਰਨ ਬਾਨ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

ਨਿਰਖਿ ਖੜਗਧੁਜ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ॥

ਬੀਸ ਸਹਸ੍ਰ ਅਸੁਰ ਪਰ ਬਾਨਾ ॥

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਸਿਧੁਜ ਛਾਡੇ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਨਾ ॥੩੭੧॥

ਏਕ ਬਾਨ ਤੇ ਧੁਜਹਿ ਗਿਰਾਯੋ ॥

ਦੁਹੂੰ ਬਿਸਿਖ ਕਰਿ ਦ੍ਵੈ ਰਥ ਚਕ੍ਰ ॥

ਕਾਟਿ ਦਏ ਛਿਨ ਇਕ ਮੈ ਬਕ੍ਰ ॥

ਚਾਰਹਿ ਬਾਨ ਚਾਰ ਹੂੰ ਬਾਜਾ ॥

ਮਾਰ ਦਏ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ॥੩੭੩॥

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਅਸੁਰ ਕਾ ਕਾਟਸਿ ਮਾਥਾ ॥

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਸਿਕੇਤਿ ਜਗਤ ਕੇ ਨਾਥਾ ॥

ਦੁਤਿਯ ਬਾਨ ਸੌ ਦੋਊ ਅਰਿ ਕਰ ॥

ਕਾਟਿ ਦਯੋ ਅਸਿਧੁਜ ਨਰ ਨਾਹਰ ॥੩੭੪॥

ਪੁਨਿ ਰਾਛਸ ਕਾ ਕਾਟਾ ਸੀਸਾ ॥

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਸਿਕੇਤੁ ਜਗਤ ਕੇ ਈਸਾ ॥

ਪੁਹਪਨ ਬ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਗਗਨ ਤੇ ਭਈ ॥

ਸਭਹਿਨ ਆਨਿ ਬਧਾਈ ਦਈ ॥੩੭੫॥

ਧੰਨ੍ਯ ਧੰਨ੍ਯ ਲੋਗਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

ਦੁਸਟਨ ਦਾਹ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ॥

ਅਖਲ ਭਵਨ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰੇ ॥

ਦਾਸ ਜਾਨਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਉਬਾਰੇ ॥੩੭੬॥

ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ ੧੦ ॥

ਹਮਰੀ ਕਰੋ ਹਾਥ ਦੈ ਰੱਛਾ ॥

Protect me O Lord! with Thine own Hands

ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ਚਿਤ ਕੀ ਇੱਛਾ ॥

all the desires of my heart be fulfilled.

ਤਵ ਚਰਨਨ ਮਨ ਰਹੈ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥

Let my mind rest under Thy Feet

ਅਪਨਾ ਜਾਨ ਕਰੋ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਾ ॥੩੭੭॥

Sustain me, considering me Thine own.377.

ਹਮਰੇ ਦੁਸਟ ਸਭੈ ਤੁਮ ਘਾਵਹੁ ॥

Destroy, O Lord! all my enemies and

ਆਪੁ ਹਾਥ ਦੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਚਾਵਹੁ ॥

protect me with Thine won Hands.

ਸੁਖੀ ਬਸੈ ਮੋਰੋ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾ ॥

May my family live in comfort

ਸੇਵਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਭੈ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥੩੭੮॥

and ease alongwith all my servants and disciples.378.

ਮੋ ਰੱਛਾ ਨਿਜ ਕਰ ਦੈ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥

Protect me O Lord! with Thine own Hands

ਸਭ ਬੈਰਨ ਕੋ ਆਜ ਸੰਘਰਿਯੈ ॥

and destroy this day all my enemies

ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਆਸਾ ॥

May all the aspirations be fulfilled

ਤੋਰ ਭਜਨ ਕੀ ਰਹੈ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥੩੭੯॥

Let my thirst for Thy Name remain afresh.379.

ਤੁਮਹਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੋਈ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਧਿਯਾਊਂ ॥

I may remember none else except Thee

ਜੋ ਬਰ ਚਹੋਂ ਸੁ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਪਾਊਂ ॥

And obtain all the required boons from Thee

ਸੇਵਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਤਾਰੀਅਹਿ ॥

Let my servants and disciples cross the world-ocean

ਚੁਨਿ ਚੁਨਿ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ॥੩੮੦॥

All my enemies be singled out and killed.380.

ਆਪ ਹਾਥ ਦੈ ਮੁਝੈ ਉਬਰਿਯੈ ॥

Protect me O Lord! with Thine own Hands and

ਮਰਨ ਕਾਲ ਕਾ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਨਿਵਰਿਯੈ ॥

relieve me form the fear of death

ਹੂਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਪੱਛਾ ॥

May Thou ever Bestow Thy favours on my side

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਸਿਧੁਜ ਜੂ ਕਰਿਯਹੁ ਰੱਛਾ ॥੩੮੧॥

Protect me O Lord! Thou, the Supreme Destroyer.381.

ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੇ ॥

Protect me, O Protector Lord!

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਇ ਪਿਯਾਰੇ ॥

Most dear, the Protector of the Saints:

ਦੀਨ ਬੰਧੁ ਦੁਸਟਨ ਕੇ ਹੰਤਾ ॥

Friend of poor and the Destroyer of the enemies

ਤੁਮ ਹੋ ਪੁਰੀ ਚਤੁਰ ਦਸ ਕੰਤਾ ॥੩੮੨॥

Thou art the Master of the fourteen worlds.382.

ਕਾਲ ਪਾਇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਪੁ ਧਰਾ ॥

In due time Brahma appeared in physical form

ਕਾਲ ਪਾਇ ਸਿਵਜੂ ਅਵਤਰਾ ॥

In due time Shiva incarnated

ਕਾਲ ਪਾਇ ਕਰ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸਾ ॥

In due time Vishnu manifested himself

ਸਕਲ ਕਾਲ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥੩੮੩॥

All this is the play of the Temporal Lord.383.

ਜਵਨ ਕਾਲ ਜੋਗੀ ਸਿਵ ਕੀਓ ॥

The Temporal Lord, who created Shiva, the Yogi

ਬੇਦ ਰਾਜ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਜੂ ਥੀਓ ॥

Who created Brahma, the Master of the Vedas

ਜਵਨ ਕਾਲ ਸਭ ਲੋਕ ਸਵਾਰਾ ॥

The Temporal Lord who fashioned the entire world

ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੩੮੪॥

I salute the same Lord.384.

ਜਵਨ ਕਾਲ ਸਭ ਜਗਤ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥

The Temporal Lord, who created the whole world

ਦੇਵ ਦੈਤ ਜੱਛਨ ਉਪਜਾਯੋ ॥

Who created gods, demons and yakshas

ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਏਕੈ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥

He is the only one form the beginning to the end

ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਝਿਯਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੩੮੫॥

I consider Him only my Guru.385.

ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਕੋ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥

I salute Him, non else, but Him

ਸਕਲ ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਜਿਨ ਆਪ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥

Who has created Himself and His subject

ਸਿਵਕਨ ਕੋ ਸਿਵਗੁਨ ਸੁਖ ਦੀਓ ॥

He bestows Divine virtues and happiness on His servants

ਸਤੱ੍ਰੁਨ ਕੋ ਪਲ ਮੋ ਬਧ ਕੀਓ ॥੩੮੬॥

He destroys the enemies instantly.386.

ਘਟ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਜਾਨਤ ॥

He knows the inner feelings of every heart

ਭਲੇ ਬੁਰੇ ਕੀ ਪੀਰ ਪਛਾਨਤ ॥

He knows the anguish of both good and bad

ਚੀਟੀ ਤੇ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਅਸਥੂਲਾ ॥

From the ant to the solid elephant

ਸਭ ਪਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰ ਫੂਲਾ ॥੩੮੭॥

He casts His Graceful glance on all and feels pleased.387.

ਸੰਤਨ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਏ ਤੇ ਦੁਖੀ ॥

He is painful, when He sees His saints in grief

ਸੁਖ ਪਾਏ ਸਾਧੁਨ ਕੇ ਸੁਖੀ ॥

He is happy, when His saints are happy.

ਏਕ ਏਕ ਕੀ ਪੀਰ ਪਛਾਨੈਂ ॥

He knows the agony of everyone

ਘਟ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਪਟ ਪਟ ਕੀ ਜਾਨੈਂ ॥੩੮੮॥

He knows the innermost secrets of every heart.388.

ਜਬ ਉਦਕਰਖ ਕਰਾ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥

When the Creator projected Himself,

ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਧਰਤ ਤਬ ਦੇਹ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

His creation manifested itself in innumerable forms

ਜਬ ਆਕਰਖ ਕਰਤ ਹੋ ਕਬਹੂੰ ॥

When at any time He withdraws His creation,

ਤੁਮ ਮੈ ਮਿਲਤ ਦੇਹ ਧਰ ਸਭਹੂੰ ॥੩੮੯॥

all the physical forms are merged in Him.389.

ਜੇਤੇ ਬਦਨ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਧਾਰੈ ॥

All the bodies of living beings created in the world

ਆਪੁ ਆਪਨੀ ਬੂਝ ਉਚਾਰੈ ॥

speak about Him according to their understanding

ਤੁਮ ਸਭਹੀ ਤੇ ਰਹਤ ਨਿਰਾਲਮ ॥

But Thou, O Lord! live quite apart from everything

ਜਾਨਤ ਬੇਦ ਭੇਦ ਅਰ ਆਲਮ ॥੩੯੦॥

this fact is know to the Vedas and the learned.390.

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਬਿਕਾਰ ਨਿਰਲੰਭ ॥

The Lord is Formless, Sinless and shelterless:

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਸੰਭ ॥

He is the Primal Power, without Blemish, without Beginning and Unborn

ਤਾਕਾ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ ਉਚਾਰਤ ਭੇਦਾ ॥

The fool claims boastfully about the knowledge of His secrets,

ਜਾ ਕੋ ਭੇਵ ਨ ਪਾਵਤ ਬੇਦਾ ॥੩੯੧॥

which even the Vedas do not know.391.

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਹਨ ਅਨੁਮਾਨਤ ॥

The fool considers Him a stone,

ਮਹਾ ਮੂੜ੍ਹ ਕਛੁ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਜਾਨਤ ॥

but the great fool does not know any secret

ਮਹਾਦੇਵ ਕੋ ਕਹਤ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਵ ॥

He calls Shiva “The Eternal Lord",

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਕਾ ਚੀਨਤ ਨਹਿ ਭਿਵ ॥੩੯੨॥

“but he does not know the secret of the Formless Lord.392.

ਆਪੁ ਆਪਨੀ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੀ ॥

According to ones won intellect,

ਬਰਨਤ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਤੁਹਿ ਤੇਤੀ ॥

one describes Thee differently

ਤੁਮਰਾ ਲਖਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥

The limits of Thy creation cannot be known

ਕਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥੩੯੩॥

and how the world was fashioned in the beginning?393.

ਏਕੈ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਸਰੂਪਾ ॥

He hath only one unparalleled Form

ਰੰਕ ਭਯੋ ਰਾਵ ਕਹੀ ਭੂਪਾ ॥

He manifests Himself as a poor man or a king at different places

ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਸੇਤਜ ਕੀਨੀ ॥

He created creatures from eggs, wombs and perspiration

ਉਤਭੁਜ ਖਾਨਿ ਬਹੁਰ ਰਚਿ ਦੀਨੀ ॥੩੯੪॥

Then He created the vegetable kingdom.394.

ਕਹੂੰ ਫੂਲ ਰਾਜਾ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਬੈਠਾ ॥

Somewhere He sits joyfully as a king

ਕਹੂੰ ਸਿਮਟਿ ਭ੍ਯਿੋ ਸੰਕਰ ਇਕੈਠਾ ॥

Somewhere He contracts Himself as Shiva, the Yogi

ਸਗਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਦਿਖਾਇ ਅਚੰਭਵ ॥

All His creation unfolds wonderful things

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਰੂਪ ਸੁਯੰਭਵ ॥੩੯੫॥

He, the Primal Power, is from the beginning and Self-Existent.395.

ਅਬ ਰੱਛਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਤੁਮ ਕਰੋ ॥

O Lord! keep me now under Thy protection

ਸਿੱਖ ਉਬਾਰਿ ਅਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਘਰੋ ॥

Protect my disciples and destroy my enemies

ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਜਿਤੇ ਉਠਵਤ ਉਤਪਾਤਾ ॥

All the villains creations outrage

ਸਕਲ ਮਲੇਛ ਕਰੋ ਰਣ ਘਾਤਾ ॥੩੯੬॥

and all the infidels be destroyed in the battlefield.396.

ਜੇ ਅਸਿਧੁਜ ਤਵ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰੇ ॥

O Supreme Destroyer! those who sought Thy refuge,

ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਦੁਖਿਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਮਰੇ ॥

their enemies met painful death

ਪੁਰਖ ਜਵਨ ਪਗ ਪਰੇ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥

The persons who fell at Thy Feet,

ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਤੁਮ ਸੰਕਟ ਸਭ ਟਾਰੇ ॥੩੯੭॥

thou didst remove all their troubles.397.

ਜੋ ਕਲਿ ਕੋ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ਧਿਐ ਹੈ ॥

Those who meditate even on the Supreme Destroyer,

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਲ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨਹਿ ਐਹੈ ॥

death cannot approach them.

ਰੱਛਾ ਹੋਇ ਤਾਹਿ ਸਭ ਕਾਲਾ ॥

They remain protected at all times

ਦੁਸਟ ਅਰਿਸਟ ਟਰੇਂ ਤਤਕਾਲਾ ॥੩੯੮॥

Their enemies and troubles come to and end instantly.398.

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਨਿਹਰਿਹੋ ॥

Upon whomsoever Thou dost cast Thy favourable glance,

ਤਾਕੇ ਤਾਪ ਤਨਕ ਮੋ ਹਰਿਹੋ ॥

they are absolved of sins instantly

ਰਿੱਧਿ ਸਿੱਧਿ ਘਰ ਮੋ ਸਭ ਹੋਈ ॥

They have all the worldly and spiritual pleasures in their homes

ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਛਾਹ ਛ੍ਵੈ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੩੯੯॥

None of their enemies can even touch their shadow.399.

ਏਕ ਬਾਰ ਜਿਨ ਤੁਮੈ ਸੰਭਾਰਾ ॥

He, who remembered Thee even once,

ਕਾਲ ਫਾਸ ਤੇ ਤਾਹਿ ਉਬਾਰਾ ॥

thou didst protect him from the noose of death

ਜਿਨ ਨਰ ਨਾਮ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ਕਹਾ ॥

Those persons, who repeated Thy Name,

ਦਾਰਿਦ ਦੁਸਟ ਦੋਖ ਤੇ ਰਹਾ ॥੪੦੦॥

they were saved from poverty and attacks of enemies.400.

ਖੜਗ ਕੇਤ ਮੈ ਸਰਣਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੀ ॥

O Immortal Being (with the sword on Your banner)! I am under Your protection.

ਆਪ ਹਾਥ ਦੈ ਲੇਹੁ ਉਬਾਰੀ ॥

Give me Your hand and save me.

ਸਰਬ ਠੌਰ ਮੋ ਹੋਹੁ ਸਹਾਈ ॥

Stand by me everywhere,

ਦੁਸਟ ਦੋਖ ਤੇ ਲੇਹੁ ਬਚਾਈ ॥੪੦੧॥

and guard me against enmity and pain. 401.

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਹਮ ਪਰ ਜਗਮਾਤਾ ॥

The Mother of the world has been kind towards me

ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਕਰਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਸੁਭਰਾਤਾ ॥

and I have completed the book this auspicious night

ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਸਕਲ ਦੇਹ ਕੋ ਹਰਤਾ ॥

The Lord is the destroyer of all the sins of the body

ਦੁਸਟ ਦੋਖਿਯਨ ਕੋ ਛੈ ਕਰਤਾ ॥੪੦੨॥

and all the malicious and wicked persons.402.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਸਿਧੁਜ ਜਬ ਭਏ ਦਯਾਲਾ ॥

When Mahakal became kind,

ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਾ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਤਤਕਾਲਾ ॥

he immediately caused me to complete this book

ਮਨ ਬਾਛਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

He will obtain the fruit desired by the mind (who will read or listen to this book)

ਦੂਖ ਨ ਤਿਸੈ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਕੋਈ ॥੪੦੩॥

and no suffering will occur to him.403.

ਅੜਿਲ ॥

ARRIL

ਸੁਨੈ ਗੁੰਗ ਜੋ ਯਾਹਿ ਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਪਾਵਈ ॥

The dumb, who will listen to it, will be blessed with the tongue to speak

ਸੁਨੈ ਮੂੜ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਇ ਚਤੁਰਤਾ ਆਵਈ ॥

The fool, who will listen to it attentively, will get wisdom

ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਭੌ ਨਿਕਟ ਨ ਤਿਨ ਨਰ ਕੇ ਰਹੈ ॥

That person will be absolved of suffering, pain or fear,

ਹੋ ਜੋ ਯਾ ਕੀ ਏਕ ਬਾਰ ਚੌਪਈ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥੪੦੪॥

Who will even once recite this Chaupai-prayer.404.

CHAUPAI

ਸੰਬਤ ਸਤ੍ਰਹ ਸਹਸ ਭਣਿਜੈ ॥

ਅਰਧ ਸਹਸ ਫੁਨਿ ਤੀਨਿ ਕਹਿਜੈ ॥

ਭਾਦ੍ਰਵ ਸੁਦੀ ਅਸਟਮੀ ਰਵਿ ਵਾਰਾ ॥

ਤੀਰ ਸਤੁਦ੍ਰਵ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸੁਧਾਰਾ ॥੪੦੫॥

It was Bikrami Samvat 1753

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਖ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੂਪ ਸੰਬਾਦੇ ਚਾਰ ਸੌ ਪਾਂਚ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੪੦੫॥੭੫੫੮॥ ਅਫਜੰੂ ॥

This book was completed on the banks of Sutlej on Sunday, the eighth Sudi of the month of Bhadon.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਦਾਸ ਜਾਨ ਕਰਿ ਦਾਸ ਪਰਿ ਕੀਜੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

ਆਪ ਹਾਥ ਦੈ ਰਾਖ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਨ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥੪੩੩॥

Considering me as Thy slave, be Gracius towards me and keep Thy hand over my head and protect me with Thy mind, action, speech and thought.433.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHUPAI

ਮੈ ਨ ਗਨੇਸਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮ ਮਨਾਊ ॥

I do not adore Ganesha in the beginning.

ਕਿਸਨ ਬਿਸਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਧਿਆਊ ॥

Nor do I meditate on Krishna and Vishnu

ਕਾਨਿ ਸੁਨੇ ਪਹਿਚਾਨ ਨ ਤਿਨ ਸੋ ॥

I have only heard about them with my ears so I do not recognize them.

ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਮੋਰੀ ਪਗ ਇਨ ਸੋ ॥੪੩੪॥

My consciousness is absorbed at the feet of the Supreme Kal (the Immanent Brahman).434.

ਮਹਾਕਾਲ ਰਖਵਾਰ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥

The Supreme Kal (God) is my Protector.

ਮਹਾ ਲੋਹ ਮੈ ਕਿੰਕਰ ਥਾਰੋ ॥

O Supreme Steel-Purusha Lord! I am a slave to You.

ਅਪੁਨਾ ਜਾਨਿ ਕਰੋ ਰਖਵਾਰ ॥

Considering me as Your own, protect me.

ਬਾਹ ਗਹੇ ਕੀ ਲਾਜ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੪੩੫॥

Do me the honour of catching my arm.435.

ਅਪੁਨਾ ਜਾਨਿ ਮੁਝੈ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਰੀਐ ॥

Considering me as Your own, sustain me.

ਚੁਨਿ ਚੁਨਿ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਮਰੀਐ ॥

Destroy my enemies by picking them up.

ਦੇਗ ਤੇਗ ਜਗ ਮੈ ਦੋਊ ਚਲੈ ॥

Let the cauldron and Sword (for the keep and protection of the lowly) ever flourish through me.

ਰਾਖੁ ਆਪਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਅਉਰ ਨ ਦਲੈ ॥੪੩੬॥

Keep me under your protection so that none, other than You, should be able to kill.436.

ਤੁਮ ਮਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਾ ॥

Sustain me forever, O Lord!

ਤੁਮ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਮੈ ਦਾਸ ਤਿਹਾਰਾ ॥

You are my Master and I am Your slave

ਜਾਨਿ ਆਪਨਾ ਮੁਝੈ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥

Considering me as Your own, be gracious towards me.

ਆਪਿ ਕਰੋ ਹਮਰੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਜ ॥੪੩੭॥

You are the one to complete all my works.437.

ਤੁਮ ਹੋ ਸਭ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

O Lord! Thou art eh king of all kings and Gracious towards the poor

ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ॥

Be Benevolent towards me,

ਦਾਸ ਜਾਨ ਕਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਮੁਹਿ ॥

Considering me as Thy own,

ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰਾ ਮੈ ਆਨਿ ਦਵਾਰਿ ਤੁਹਿ ॥੪੩੮॥

Because, I have surrendered and fallen at Thy Gate.438.

ਅਪੁਨਾ ਜਾਨਿ ਕਰੋ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਾ ॥

Sustain me, considering me as Thy own

ਤੁਮ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੈ ਕਿੰਕਰ ਥਾਰਾ ॥

Thou art my Lord and I am Thy slave

ਦਾਸ ਜਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਉਬਾਰੋ ॥

Considering me as Thy slave,

ਹਮਰੇ ਸਭ ਬੈਰੀਅਨ ਸੰਘਾਰੋ ॥੪੩੯॥

Save me with Thy own hands and destroy all my enemies.439.

ਪ੍ਰਥਮਿ ਧਰੋ ਭਗਵਤ ਕੋ ਧ੍ਯਾਨਾ ॥

At the very outset, I meditate on Bhagavata (Lord-God)

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਰੋ ਕਬਿਤਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਨਾ ॥

Then endeavour to compose various types of poesy.

ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਜਥਾਮਤਿ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥

I speak out the memories of Krishna according to my

ਚੂਕ ਹੋਇ ਕਬਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਸੁਧਾਰੋ ॥੪੪੦॥

Intellect and if there remins any shortcoming in it, then the poets may improve it.440.

ਕਬਿਬਾਚ ॥ ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

The Words of the Poet: DOHRA

ਜੋ ਨਿਜ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੋ ਸੋ ਕਹਾ ਸੋ ਕਹਿਹੋਂ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

Whatever my Lord said to me, I say the same in the world.

ਜੋ ਤਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਧਿਆਇ ਹੈ ਅੰਤ ਸੁਰਗ ਕੋ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੫੯॥

Those who have meditated on the Lord, ultimately go to heaven.59.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਦੁਇ ਏਕ ਹੈ ਬਿਬ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

The Lord and His devotees are one, there is no difference between them.

ਜਲ ਤੇ ਉਪਜ ਤਰੰਗ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਹੀ ਬਿਖੈ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੬੦॥

Just as the wave of water, arising in water, merges in water.60.

ਭੇਖ ਦਿਖਾਇ ਜਗਤ ਕੋ ਲੋਗਨ ਕੋ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨ ॥

Those who exhibit various guises in the world and win people on their side.

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲ ਕਾਤੀ ਕਟਿਓ ਬਾਸੁ ਨਰਕ ਮੋ ਲੀਨ ॥੫੬॥

They will reside in hell, when the sword of death chops them. 56.

ਤਿਨ ਬੇਦੀਅਨ ਕੀ ਕੁਲ ਬਿਖੈ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਇ ॥

Nanak Rai took birth in the Bedi clan.

ਸਭ ਸਿੱਖਨ ਕੋ ਸੁਖ ਦਏ ਜਹ ਤਹ ਭਏ ਸਹਾਇ ॥੪॥

He brought comfort to all his disciples and helped them at all times.4.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHAUPAI

ਤਿਨ ਇਹ ਕਲ ਮੋ ਧਰਮੁ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥

ਸਭ ਸਾਧਨ ਕੋ ਰਾਹੁ ਬਤਾਯੋ ॥

Guru Nanak spread Dharma in the Iron age and put the seekers on the path.

ਜੋ ਤਾਂ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ॥

ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥੫॥

Those who followed the path propagated by him, were never harmed by the vices.5.

ਜੇ ਜੇ ਪੰਥ ਤਵਨ ਕੇ ਪਰੇ ॥

ਪਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰੇ ॥

All those who came within his fold, they were absolved of all their sins and troubles,

ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥

ਜਾਲ ਕਾਲ ਕੇ ਬੀਚ ਨ ਆਏ ॥੬॥

Their sorrows, their wants were vanished and even their transmigration came to and end.6.

ਠਾਢ ਭਯੋ ਮੈ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰ ਬਚਨ ਕਹਾ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਆਇ ॥

I stood up with folded hands and bowing down my head, I said:

ਪੰਥ ਚਲੈ ਤਬ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਜਬ ਤੁਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਹਾਇ ॥੩੦॥

“The path (Panth) shall prevail only in the world, with THY ASSISTANCE.”30.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਸੁਨਿ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਯਾ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਦੁਖੀ ਰਹਤ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ॥

ਅੰਤਿ ਲਹਤ ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਤ ਹੈ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੨੪੫੫॥

“O king! listen, the saints of God live in agony in this world, but ultimately they attain salvation and realise the Lord.2455.

ਸੋਰਠਾ ॥

SORTHA

ਰੁਦ੍ਰ ਭਗਤ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ਸੁਖ ਕੇ ਦਿਵਸ ਸਦਾ ਭਰੈ ॥

ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਫਲੁ ਕਛੁ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੋ ॥੨੪੫੬॥

“The devotees of the Rudra always pass their life in the world comfortably, but they cannot attain salvation and always remain in transmigration.”2456.

ਠੀਕਰ ਫੋਰਿ ਦਿਲੀਸ ਸਿਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੁਰਿ ਕੀਯਾ ਪਯਾਨ ॥

Breaking the potsherd of his body head of the king of Delhi (Aurangzeb), He left for the abode of the Lord.

ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਕਰੀ ਨ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਆਨ ॥੧੫॥

None could perform such a feat as that of Tegh Bahadur.15.

ਤੇਗ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਕੇ ਚਲਤ ਭਯੋ ਜਗਤ ਕੋ ਸੋਕ ॥

The whole world bemoaned the departure of Tegh Bahadur.

ਹੈ ਹੈ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਭਯੋ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਸੁਰ ਲੋਕ ॥੧੬॥

While the world Iamented, the gods hailed his arrival in heavens.16.

ਜਬ ਆਇਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਭਯੋ ਜਨਮੁ ਧਰਾ ਜਗ ਆਇ ॥

When the Lord Willed, I was born on this earth.

ਅਬ ਮੈ ਕਥਾ ਸੰਛੇਪ ਤੇ ਸਬਹੂੰ ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥੬੪॥

Now I shall narrate briefly my own story.64.

ਠਾਢ ਭਯੋ ਮੈ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰ ਬਚਨ ਕਹਾ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਆਇ ॥

ਜੇ ਜੇ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੋ ਨਿਤ ਉਠਿ ਧਿਐਹੈ ਸੰਤ ॥

All those saints, who will ever meditate on Thee

ਅੰਤ ਲਹੈਗੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿਗੇ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੬॥੨੬੨॥

They will attain salvation at the end and will realize the Lord.6.262.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਮੋ ਕੋਟਿਕ ਬਿਸਨ ਮਹੇਸ ॥

In the body of the Immanent Lord, million of Vishnus and Shivas abide.

ਕੋਟਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਰਿ ਜਲੇਸ ॥੧॥

Million of Indras, Brahmas, Suryas, Chandras and Varunas are present thre in His divine body.1.

ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

SWAYYA

ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ਕੋ ਪੂਤ ਹੌ ਬਾਮਨ ਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਕੈ ਤਪੁ ਆਵਤ ਹੈ ਜੁ ਕਰੋ ॥

I am the son of a Kshatriya and not of a Brahmin who may instruct for performing severe austerities

ਅਰੁ ਅਉਰ ਜੰਜਾਰ ਜਿਤੋ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੋ ਤੁਹਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਹਾ ਚਿਤ ਤਾ ਮੈ ਧਰੋ ॥

How can I absorb myself in the embarrassments of the world by leaving you

ਅਬ ਰੀਝਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਹੁ ਵਹੈ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਜੋਊ ਹਉ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰੋ ॥

Whatever request I am making with my folded hands, O Lord!

ਜਬ ਆਉ ਕੀ ਅਉਧ ਨਿਦਾਨ ਬਨੈ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਤਬ ਜੂਝਿ ਮਰੋ ॥੨੪੮੯॥

Kindly be graceful and bestow this boon on me that when ever my end comes, that I may die fighting in the battlefield.2489.

ਚਾਰਣੀ ॥ ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

CHAARNI. DOHRA

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਸਾਜਨ ਰਾਖਸੀ ਦੁਸਮਨ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥

To whomsoever the Lord protects, the enemy can do nothing to him.

ਛ੍ਵੈ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਛਾਹਿ ਕੌ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਜਾਇ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੨੪॥

None can touch his shadow, the fool makes useless effort.24.

ਜੋ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥

Those who have taken refuge with the saints, what can be said about them?

ਦੰਤ ਜੀਭ ਜਿਮ ਰਾਖਿ ਹੈ ਦੁਸਟ ਅਰਿਸਟ ਸੰਘਾਰ ॥੨੫॥

God saves from the inimical and wicked persons by destroying them, just as the tongue is protected within the teeth.25.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਸਤ੍ਰਹ ਸੈ ਪੈਤਾਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਵਨ ਸੁਦਿ ਥਿਤਿ ਦੀਪ ॥

In the year 1745 of the Vikrami era in the Sudi aspect of the moon in the month of Sawan,

ਨਗਰ ਪਾਵਟਾ ਸੁਭ ਕਰਨ ਜਮੁਨਾ ਬਹੈ ਸਮੀਪ ॥੨੪੯੦॥

In the town of Paonta at the auspicious hour, on banks of the flowing Yamuna, (this work has been completed).2490.

ਦਸਮ ਕਥਾ ਭਾਗੌਤ ਕੀ ਭਾਖਾ ਕਰੀ ਬਨਾਇ ॥

I have composed the discourse of the tenth part (Skandh) of Bhagavat in the vernacular

ਅਵਰ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧਰਮ ਜੁਧ ਕੇ ਚਾਇ ॥੨੪੯੧॥

O Lord! I have no other desire and have only the zeal for the war fought on the basis of righteousness.2491.

ਸਵੈਯਾ ॥

SWAYYA

ਧੰਨਿ ਜੀਓ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਜਗ ਮੈ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਜੁਧੁ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ ॥

Bravo to the soul of that person, who remembers the Lord through his mouth and reflects in his mind about the war of righteousness

ਦੇਹ ਅਨਿਤ ਨ ਨਿਤ ਰਹੈ ਜਸੁ ਨਾਵ ਚੜੈ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰ ਤਾਰੈ ॥

Who considers this body the war of righteousness, who considers this body as transient, ascends the boat of Lords’ praise a

ਧੀਰਜ ਧਾਮ ਬਨਾਇ ਇਹੈ ਤਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਸੁ ਦੀਪਕ ਜਿਉ ਉਜੀਆਰੈ ॥

ਗਿਆਨਹਿ ਕੀ ਬਢਨੀ ਮਨਹੁ ਹਾਥ ਲੈ ਕਾਤਰਤਾ ਕੁਤਵਾਰ ਬੁਹਾਰੈ ॥੨੪੯੨॥

Who makes this body as the abode of forbearance and enlightens it with the lamp of intellect and who taking the broom of knowledge in his hand sweeps away the rubbish of cowardice.2492.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

ਰਾਮ ਕਥਾ ਜੁਗ ਜੁਗ ਅਟਲ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ਭਾਖਤ ਨੇਤ ॥

ਸੁਰਗ ਬਾਸ ਰਘੁਬਰ ਕਰਾ ਸਗਰੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਸਮੇਤ ॥੮੫੮॥

The story of Ram remain immortal throughout the ages and in this way Ram went to abide in heaven alongwith (all the resident of) the city.858.

ਚੌਪਈ ॥

CHAUPAI

ਜੋ ਇਹ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨੈ ਅਰੁ ਗਾਵੈ ॥

ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਤਿਹ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

ਬਿਸਨ ਭਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਏ ਫਲ ਹੋਈ ॥

ਆਧਿ ਬਯਾਧਿ ਛ੍ਵੈ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੮੫੯॥

He, who will listen to this story and sing it, he will be free from the sufferings and sins. The reward of the devotion to Vishnu (and his incarnation Ram) that no ailment of any kind will touch him.859.

ਸੰਮਤ ਸੱਤ੍ਰਹ ਸਹਸ ਪਚਾਵਨ ॥

This Granth (book) has been complete (and improved)

ਹਾੜ ਵਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੈ ਸੁਖ ਦਾਵਨ ॥

ਤ੍ਵ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਕਰਿ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸੁਧਾਰਾ ॥

Seventeen hundred and fifty-five

ਭੂਲ ਪਰੀ ਲਹੁ ਲੇਹੁ ਸੁਧਾਰਾ ॥੮੬੦॥

If there has remained any error in it, then kindly correct it.860.

ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਤੁੰਗ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਤਰ ਸਤਦ੍ਰੱਵ ਤੀਰ ਤਰੰਗ ॥

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਤ ਪੂਰਨ ਕੀਯੋ ਰਘੁਬਰ ਕਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ॥੮੬੧॥

The story of Raghuvir Ram was complete by the Grace of God on the bank of Sutlej in the valley of the mountain.861.

ਸਾਧ ਅਸਾਧ ਜਾਨੋ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਦ ਸੁਬਾਦ ਬਿਬਾਦਿ ॥

The saint be not considered as unsaintly ever and the debate as controversial ever

ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਕਲ ਪੂਰਣ ਕੀਯੋ ਭਗਵਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥੮੬੨॥

This whole Granth (book) has been completed by the Grace of God.862.

ਸ੍ਵੈਯਾ ॥

SWAYYA

ਪਾਇ ਗਹੇ ਜਬ ਤੇ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤਬ ਤੇ ਕੋਊ ਆਂਖ ਤਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਆਨਯੋ ॥

O God! the day when I caught hold of your feet, I do not bring anyone else under my sight

ਰਾਮ ਰਹੀਮ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਕੁਰਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਹੈਂ ਮਤ ਏਕ ਨ ਮਾਨਯੋ ॥

None other is liked by me now the Puranas and the Quran try to know Thee by the names of Ram and Rahim and talk about you through several stories,

ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਸਭੈ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਦ ਕਹੈ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਨ ਜਾਨਯੋ ॥

The Simritis, Shastras and Vedas describe several mysteries of yours, but I do not agree with any of them.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਸਿਪਾਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਮੈ ਨ ਕਹਯੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਹਿ ਬਖਾਨਯੋ ॥੮੬੩॥

O sword-wielder God! This all has been described by Thy Grace, what power can I have to write all this?.863.

ਦੋਹਰਾ ॥

DOHRA

ਸਗਲ ਦੁਆਰ ਕਉ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਗਹਯੋ ਤੁਹਾਰੋ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

O Lord! I have forsaken all other doors and have caught hold of only Thy door. O Lord! Thou has caught hold of my arm

ਬਾਹਿ ਗਹੇ ਕੀ ਲਾਜ ਅਸਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦਾਸ ਤੁਹਾਰ ॥੮੬੪॥

I, Govind, am Thy serf, kindly take (care of me and) protect my honour.864.

ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਅਨੰਦੁ

ਅਨੰਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Joy has welled up, O my mother, for I have obtained my True Guru.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਜੀਆ ਵਾਧਾਈਆ ॥

The True Guru, I have found with ease and within my mind resounds the music of bliss.

ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਪਰੀਆ ਸਬਦ ਗਾਵਣ ਆਈਆ ॥

The gem like measures and their families, have come to hymn the Guru's word.

ਸਬਦੋ ਤ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਹਰੀ ਕੇਰਾ ਮਨਿ ਜਿਨੀ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

They, who enshrine the Lord in their mind, sing the Gurbani of the Lord.

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Says Nanak, joy has ensued and I have attained to the True Guru.

ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

O my soul, ever abide thou with thy Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲਿ ਰਹੁ ਤੂ ਮੰਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੂਖ ਸਭਿ ਵਿਸਾਰਣਾ ॥

Ever abide thou with thy God, O my soul and He shall make thee forget all sufferings.

ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਓਹੁ ਕਰੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਭਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਾ ॥

He Shall own thee and shall arrange all thine affairs.

ਸਭਨਾ ਗਲਾ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ॥

The Lord is Omnipotent to do all things. Why Forget Him from thy mind?

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥

Says Nanak, O my soul, abide thou with thy God.

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਕਿਆ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ॥

O my True Lord, what is that which Thou has not in Thy home?

ਘਰਿ ਤ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਵਏ ॥

Within Thy home is everything, but he alone receives it, whom Thou givest.

ਸਦਾ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਏ ॥

He, who enshrines Thy Name in his mind ever hymns Thine praise and excellences, O Lord.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਵਾਜੇ ਸਬਦ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥

Many strains of rejoicing play of him in whose mind the Lord's Name abides.

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਿਆ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ॥੩॥

Says Nanak, O my True Lord, what is that, which is not in Thy mansion?

ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥

The True Name is my only support.

ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਭੁਖਾ ਸਭਿ ਗਵਾਈਆ ॥

The True Name, which has satisfied all my hunger, is my only support.

ਕਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ਵਸਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਛਾ ਸਭਿ ਪੁਜਾਈਆ ॥

Abiding in my mind, the Name has blessed me with peace and pleasure and fulfilled all my desires.

ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਜਿਸ ਦੀਆ ਏਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥

I am eve a sacrifice unto my Guru, who possesses such like excellences.

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਧਰਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥

Says Nanak, hearken ye, O saints, profess ye love for the Lord's Gurbani.

ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥੪॥

The True Name is my only support.

ਵਾਜੇ ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਸਭਾਗੈ ॥

The five forms of music ring in that very fortunate house.

ਘਰਿ ਸਭਾਗੈ ਸਬਦ ਵਾਜੇ ਕਲਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਧਾਰੀਆ ॥

In that very fortunate house(heart) into which the Lord has infused His might resound the strains.

ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥

O Lord, Thou makest man control the five demons and slyest the agonising death

ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੇ ॥

They, whose destiny Thou hast so pre-ordained, O Lord, are attached to Thy Name.

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਅਨਹਦ ਵਾਜੇ ॥੫॥

Says Nanak, they obtain peace and in their heart-home plays the celestial strain.

ਅਨਦੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਹੋ ਸਗਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰੇ ॥

Listen ye to 'word of bliss, O very fortunate ones and all your longings shall be fulfilled.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਉਤਰੇ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਸੂਰੇ ॥

I have obtained Lord the Supreme Being and all my sorrows have departed.

ਦੂਖ ਰੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪ ਉਤਰੇ ਸੁਣੀ ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

Hearing the True Gurbani, I am rid of the troubles, maladies and sufferings.

ਸੰਤ ਸਾਜਨ ਭਏ ਸਰਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

The saints and friends have become happy on knowing it from the Perfect Guru.

ਸੁਣਤੇ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕਹਤੇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥

Immaculate are the hearers and pure the utters and they see the True Guru all-pervading.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਲਾਗੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਅਨਹਦ ਤੂਰੇ ॥੪੦॥੧॥

Prays Nanak, repairing to the Guru's Feet, the unblown bugles play for the mortal.

ਮੁੰਦਾਵਣੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Seal 5th Guru.

ਥਾਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਿੰਨਿ ਵਸਤੂ ਪਈਓ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੋ ॥

In the platter are placed three things, truth, contentment and meditations.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਪਇਓ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਭਸੁ ਅਧਾਰੋ ॥

The Nectar-Name of the Lord, who is the support of all, has also been put therein.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਖਾਵੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਭੁੰਚੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰੋ ॥

If some one partakes this and relishes it, he is emancipated.

ਏਹ ਵਸਤੁ ਤਜੀ ਨਹ ਜਾਈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਰਖੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੋ ॥

This can be forsaken not, so ever and always keep thou this enshrined in thy mind.

ਤਮ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਚਰਨ ਲਗਿ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਸਾਰੋ ॥੧॥

Repairing to the Lord's feet, the dark world ocean is crossed; O Nanak, everything is an extension of the Lord.

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Slok 5th Guru.

ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਤੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈਨੋ ਜੋਗੁ ਕੀਤੋਈ ॥

O Lord, I have not appreciated, what thou have done for me, thou have made me worthy of Thy service.

ਮੈ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿਆਰੇ ਕੋ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਆਪੇ ਤਰਸੁ ਪਇਓਈ ॥

In me, the meritless one, there is no virtue. Thou of Thyself, O my Lord, have taken pity on me.

ਤਰਸੁ ਪਇਆ ਮਿਹਰਾਮਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥

Thou have shown mercy and rained Thine benediction on me. I have now met with the True Guru, my friend.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਥੀਵੈ ਹਰਿਆ ॥੧॥

Nanak! Then alone I live and my body and soul blossom forth, if I am blessed with the Lord's Name.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauri.

ਤਿਥੈ ਤੂ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਜਿਥੈ ਕੋਇ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

There Thou art, O Omnipotent Lord, where there is none else.

ਓਥੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਖ ਅਗਨੀ ਉਦਰ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

There in the fire of mother's womb, Thou protectest the mortal, O Lord.

ਸੁਣਿ ਕੈ ਜਮ ਕੇ ਦੂਤ ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਛਡਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

Hearing Thy Name, the Death's couriers leave off the Mortal.

ਭਉਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

The dreadful, formidable and unfathomable world-ocean is crossed through the Guru's instruction.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਗੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੇਇ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

They, who feel thirst for Thee partake of Thy Nectar.

ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਏਹੋ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗਾਹਿ ॥

This is the only virtuous deed in the Darkage, that one sings the praise of the World-Lord.

ਸਭਸੈ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਸਮੑਾਲੇ ਸਾਹਿ ਸਾਹਿ ॥

The Master is merciful to all. He takes care of everyone at every breath.

ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਜਿ ਆਵੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਹਿ ॥੯॥

O Nanak, none who longingly comes to Thine door, O Lord, returns empty-handed.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Slok 5th Guru.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਰਾਧਣਾ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ॥

Within thy mind, contemplate thou on the Guru and with thy tongue, utter the Guru's Name.

ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੇਖਣਾ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ॥

With thine eyes, behold the True Guru and with thine ears, hear the Guru's Name.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਠਾਉ ॥

Being imbued with the True Guru, thou shalt find a seat in the Lord's court.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਏਹ ਵਥੁ ਦੇਇ ॥

Says Nanak, the Lord gives this commodity to him, on whom he showers His benediction.

ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਉਤਮ ਕਾਢੀਅਹਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕੇਈ ਕੇਇ ॥੧॥

Rare, very rare, indeed, are such persons, who are said to be good men, in the world.

ਮਃ ੫ ॥

5th Guru.

ਰਖੇ ਰਖਣਹਾਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥

The saviour has saved me and He Himself has redeemed me.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਇ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥

Falling at the Guru's feet, mine affairs have been adjusted.

ਹੋਆ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥

When the Lord Himself becomes compassionate, within my mind, I forget Him not.

ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥

In the society of the holy-men, I have crossed the life's dreadful ocean.

ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਦੁਸਟ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਅਨੁ ॥

The apostates, slanderers and miscreants, the Lord, by has destroyed in an instant.

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

In his mind, Nanak has the mainstay of the Lord,

ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

by remembering whom, peace is obtained and all the troubles vanish.
